“Bernard” is the latest single released from You Become The Mountain, the forthcoming long player from Jeffrey Silverstein out April 3rd via Arrowhawk Records. The single arrives with a video shot and cut by Austin Abbott for the Portland meditative folk songwriter’s airy pedal steel track.

From Silverstein:
This song is about the moment in a relationship where your partner shows you an important part of their past for the first time. It's a sign of trust and deepens your understanding and appreciation of that person.

For me this came in 2015 when my wife took me to see her childhood home(s) in deep south-central Colorado in the San Luis Valley. Seeing the way she connected and responded to the mountains and the cold desert climate painted a picture of how wild and free her childhood was.

As we walked near the property of one of the houses, she noted where she buried some of her beloved childhood pets. Bernard, her bearded dragon got perhaps the most elaborate funeral of all. It was a simple moment that has since carried so much weight for me. We came home from that trip feeling closer than we ever had.

From Abbott:
In discussing what a video for the song "Bernard" would look like, Jeffrey and I sat over a beer and talked about what the song meant and (emotionally) sounded like. We quickly came to the films of Kelly Reichardt as a jumping off point, from both an aesthetic and tonal point of view. So while we had an outline in mind, we more-so just took a drive along the gorge, stopping to film when we felt it made sense. Like the video itself, the shoot lead us where we were always going to be.
