Originally released in 1966, Meet The Mahotella Queens was the debut record from a group of South African studio vocalists led by the gruff and groaning voiced Simon "Mahlathini" Nkabinde and a rotating trio of backing female harmonies. In the 60s, the Queens and their “King” performed a new style of Zulu jive music called mgqashiyo with roots in early traditional upbeat ethnic dance music of Johannesburg.
