Ever Since We've Known It: More North Carolina Mountain Singing
Death Is Not The End invite folklorist Derek Piotr back for another volume of excavated recordings lodged deep within the Blue Ridge Mountains for Ever Since We’ve Known It: More North Carolina Mountain Singing. Much like the exceptional first offering on 2021’s Last Wisps of the Old Ways, Piotr brings forth a slew of unforgettable Old Time ballads that center around the overlooked star Mrs. Lena Bare Turbyfill, of Elk Park, NC.
Additionally, we’re passing the sticks over to Derek Piotr for a very special edition of our New Commute radio show on Boone Area Community Radio today, Wednesday, February 16 from 8 to 10 pm est. Tune in.
A message from Derek Piotr:
“In working with archival field-recordings from Appalachia, and capturing some of my own, I've accumulated examples of some of the most beautiful songs on the planet, sung by some of the most gifted singers. The star here is Lena Turbyfill of Elk Park, NC, but this mix also stretches to include recordings I took of Lena's family and friends, often down the phone to me. I also chose recordings made by friends, so here you will find the voices of Trevor McKenzie, William Ritter, Ian Kirkpatrick, Sheila Kay Adams, Bobby McMillon and Charlie Glenn. All these recordings highlight the incredible vibrant nature of Appalachian voices: nothing seems better to me.”
