The Numero Group’s latest audio archive is REACH, an anti-algorithmic compilation of twelve tracks plucked from twelve discrete musical micro-genres. There’s a cut from Alex Johnson’s magnanimous cassette of dark and enchanting compositions he sent as gifts to American servicemen and women serving in Iraq and Kuwait in 1991 and one from Ascending Wave’s prog-fusion prototype “Modulation Del Sol.” Conversely, journeyman bassist Calvin Keys’ glossy post-bop and John D. Curnow’s wild bird call field recordings from the northern Wisconsin and Minnesota wilderness find real estate on this unimaginably far-reaching collection.
