NYC’s ace jazz ensemble Onyx Collective, popularized from countless first-class collaborations with Dev Hynes, David Byrne, and A$AP Rocky have shared Manhattan Special, a record paying tribute to the 100th anniversary of the boundlessly influential songs of Richard Rodgers & Hart/Hammerstein. Enlisting colleagues from their musical intelligentsia like Kelsey Lu, Okay Kaya, Julian Soto, and Nick Hakim, the enigmatic outfit carries the iconic standards from “My Favorite Things” to “My Funny Valentine” through a contemporary gateway reworking the century-old songs with the Onyx Collective’s free-form neon experimentation.
